“Bajo las Suelas” or “underneath the Soils” is a traveling public installation by Chilean artist Ximena Soza.
The piece was first installed in a corner of San Francisco’s Mission District, its second stop is Milwaukee and Chicago will be next. That first time, the piece was exhibited; it displayed donated and collected shoes, yarn and 50 stories about displacement sent from all around the world. Previous to the installation, the artist made a call to friends, students, colleagues and family to write about displacement, related to the displacement of the body or the soul; 50 initial stories about exile, gentrification, foreclosure, immigration, dictatorships, death and love were shared. The stories came from Prison, islands in Chile, Spain, Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, Puerto Rico, Palestine and, 8 States in The United States. New stories were shared and written in site, while people walked down the street, engaged and interacted with the piece. More stories keep on coming until today!
